BRIAN GRIFFITHS | BORROWED WORLD, BORROWED EYES, GLASGOW, SCOTLAND
2 AUGUST - 22 SEPTEMBER, TRAMWAY 2, GLASGOW, SCOTLAND
For his most ambitious solo exhibition to date, Griffiths responds to the industrial scale of Tramway’s main gallery space with a mammoth field of sculptures. The gallery is transformed into a maze-like space featuring a field of geometric sculptures, each shrouded in worn, painted, patched and stitched tarpaulins. Influenced by Cormac McCarthy’s novel ‘The Road’ and his numerous description of grey, the artist renders each sculpture in a palette of grey hues, from silvery grey to heavy muddy grey. Grey as the Tramway floor, grey as the moon, grey a pair of old discoloured underwear, grey as the average Glasgow day. Brian Griffiths creates monumental sculptures from materials that invoke feelings of familiarity or nostalgia, creating what he terms "short cuts" to a sense of authenticity. His installations are often highly theatrical or absurd - the gallery functions as a stage and the objects within it as carefully constructed props. Using recycled or discarded materials, Griffiths gives them a second life, imbuing them with new and imagined histories and creating works which are hybrids of fact and fiction.

Homebodies presents work by contemporary artists who examine the space of the home, both literally and metaphorically, as an integral site for making art. Featuring an expansive range of artworks, some made of materials found in the domestic sphere and others that represent or re-create a sense of domesticity, Homebodies demonstrates a new understanding of how the domestic context has influenced the creation and interpretation of contemporary art. The exhibition incorporates various media, including paintings by Hurvin Anderson; sculptures by George Segal and Rachel Whiteread; installations by Alexandre da Cunha and Do Ho Suh; photography by Marina Abramović, Barbara Kruger, Doug Aitken, and Adrian Piper; video by Martha Rosler, Rivane Neuenschwander, and Guy Ben-Ner; and a living-room environment by Dzine that doubles as a nail salon. The exhibition is likewise international in its reach, drawing from six continents to include more than forty artists at various stages in their careers.

COMING AND GOING, CITIZENSHIP AND TRAVEL | A PIECE BY ANTONI MUNTADAS TO GREET THE PUBLIC
In 2012, staff members and representatives of the MuCEM users committee formed a group of patrons and called upon the services of the Nouveaux commanditaires de la Fondation de France to commission an artistic work on the theme of citizenship in the foyer of the modern building. With roots in the Mediterranean, "citoyenneté" - or citizenship - is one of the most striking characteristics of this civilizational ensemble, and echoes not only the history but also the political, social and economic changes underway on both sides of the Mediterranean. With their initiative, the patrons expressed a desire to make the MuCEM a "public place", a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas. Supported by the Bureau des Compétences et Désirs, mediator for the work of the Nouveaux Commanditaires, they placed their order with the artist Antoni Muntadas. The artist's proposal, "Aller-Retour, Citoyenneté et déplacements" (Coming and Going, Citizenship and Travel), is a work built around three components: image, language and artefacts. More precisely, it takes the form of an installation made from transportation crates that open onto images of sea, taken from a shoot especially organised for this project in six Mediterranean ports. These images form the background across which phrases and words are shown in different languages, raising the various issues of citizenship. The work, installed in the foyer of the MuCEM, greets visitors upon their arrival.

In collaboration with Independent Curators International (ICI), Socrates Sculpture Park presents do it (outside), an exhibition conceived of and curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist. With historical antecedents in Dada and Fluxus, do it (outside) is a selection of artists' instructions interpreted by other artists, performers, community groups, and the public. The instructions and resulting works will be presented outdoors utilizing a site-specific design by Christoff : Finio Architecture, the NY-based architecture and design studio of Taryn Christoff and Martin Finio. In the last 20 years, versions of do it have been presented in over 50 venues worldwide, giving new meaning to the concept of the “Exhibition in Progress.”

ADRIAN VILLAR ROJAS | LA INOCENCIA DE LOS ANIMALES | MOMA PS1 | USA
12 MAY - 4 AUGUST
Adrián Villar Rojas’s La inocencia de los animales (The innocence of animals) is an immersive installation that resembles both an amphitheater of antiquity and a postapocalyptic cavern. Consisting of cracked, crumbling clay and concrete, the work points forward and backwards—seemingly to the very beginnings of civilization and its aftermath. Villar Rojas’s work also serves as a place to impart and absorb knowledge by acting as the location of the EXPO School. Speaking of his work, Villar Rojas says, “What I wanted to do was work as if I was not human. As if the human species didn’t exist anymore. I mean, as far as we know, for 6,000 light years around us, the only beings that are producing symbols, that are thinking—in the planets, in the universe—are humans. So when humans disappear from the face of the earth, then there will be no more art. What could you do in those last moments? What would the last art look like?”

Mateo López: 'A Trip from Here to There', MoMA, NYC, USA
MATEO LÓPEZ: 'A TRIP FROM HERE TO THERE', MOMA, NYC, USA
15 MARCH - 30 JULY, GROUP SHOW
Over the course of two years, from 2008 to 2010, the artist Mateo López traveled through his native Colombia, from Bogota to Cali to Medellin. Crisscrossing vast expanses of territory via Vespa, López made drawings, rendering the ordinary objects he encountered in precise detail. In a country occupied by government forces and paramilitary rebels, traveling itself—and the diaristic drawing that served as documentation—became an act of resistance. Using López’s Viaje sin movimiento—an installation of his drawings from this journey—as a starting point, A Trip from Here to There explores practices and works generated by walking and wandering. As members of exploratory expeditions and surveys, painters and draftsmen have long played key roles in the plotting and investigation of place. However, in the second half of the 20th century, the journey itself became both medium and subject for many artists. In some works, a walk or sojourn is precisely documented via maps and charts, dates and times, while in others, wandering’s inherent detours and deviations are exploited, resulting in collages of impressions or graphs of explored terrain. For some artists, drawing is both nomadic and solitary, while for others it is a way to engage with one’s environment and its inhabitants.
